DeFAANGed

A blog about staying sane on (and off) the Internet.

The web is rapidly enshittifying thanks to corporate greed, ridiculously overhyped AI, incompetence, and lack of care.

...at least, that's how it seems if you accept the defaults the megacorps try to force on you. Out in the far reaches of the 'net, unnoticed by the Googles and Facebooks of the world, cyber-homesteaders are humming a different tune, building the human future you've always wanted to see.

Like you, I'm grieving for what we've lost in the web's collapse. But I'm also looking forward to what could be, and delighting in what still is. There's actually a lot of amazing stuff on the web, if you know where to look. Not just diversions — though there's plenty of those — but the practical stuff of life: tools and apps and organizations and even companies that aren't evil. We can have a better future, and even a better present, if we only know where to look for it.

This blog aspires to be many things: a treasure map to that better present, a chronicle of my discoveries on the web, a memoir of my struggles with Internet addiction, and — who knows? — maybe the start of a new community.

Yours truly,

Ben

P.P.S. Yes, I know that FAANG as an acronym referring to Big Tech companies is outdated, but I couldn't resist the pun.
